How to participate

Taking part in the BOB project is very simple! Just follow these four steps:

1. Download the BOB App

The App is available on both the Apple Store and Google Play. 


2. Open the BOB App and register

After downloading and launching the app, you can create your SPOTTERON account by entering your email address and a username. The username doesn’t have to be your real name, but it must contain at least six characters. Choose a password with a minimum of eight characters.

After registering a new account, you will be logged in immediately. Later on, you can customize your user profile: all the information and the profile picture you upload are optional.


3. Observe the behavior of the stag beetle

Follow these guidelines to carry out a behavioral observation that allows for the collection of accurate and reliable scientific data:

  1. Do not disturb the animal!
    When observing the stag beetle, it is essential to behave respectfully and avoid interfering with its natural activities.
        • Avoid any form of handling, even if it’s just to get a better photograph.
        • Always maintain a safe distance that does not alter the beetle’s behavior. The goal is to observe without influencing: avoid sudden movements and loud noises.
        • If you believe your presence may have affected the beetle’s behavior in any way, stop the observation and do not record it.
    Remember: a discreet and responsible observation ensures not only the animal’s well-being but also the reliability of the collected data.

  2. The right image at the right time
    In the app, a photo is the first requested field—but you don’t have to upload it right away. You are free to choose the most suitable moment to take a picture, so you don’t miss important details of the behavior you are observing.
    Remember: direct observation always comes before trying to get the perfect shot.
    The photo plays a key role in data verification: it helps confirm the species, determine the sex, and verify that the individual is alive.
    Ideally, you should provide two images:
        • a close-up photo clearly showing the beetle
        • a wider photo showing the environment and context

  3. Tell us more
    At the end of the observation, you will find a field for free notes. This space is entirely yours—you can use it to share any detail you find relevant, even if it’s not among the app’s preset questions.
    Even observations that seem minor can help deepen our understanding of the species.

4. Enter your observation in the BOB App

Tap the icon located at the bottom center of the screen.
 Important! Make sure GPS location services are enabled on your device.

Select the target species: Lucanus cervus.
Indicate the number of individuals observed by choosing between one, two, or more than two.

Important! If two individuals are less than 20 cm apart, select 2; if there appears to be a group of several individuals, select >2. Otherwise, select 1 and focus on observing a single individual.
